GARBHINI PARICHARYA AND PRASAVA RAKSHA  (PRE NATAL AND POST NATAL CARE)

PRENATAL CARE

Ayurveda places an enormous emphasis on the importance of caring for the mother before, during and after pregnancy. Fetus is dependent on the mother in every aspect during intrauterine life. So, the health of fetus is totally dependent upon the maternal health. The ultimate aim of preconception and prenatal care is healthy progeny. It includes:

  • Physical dimension
  • Psychological dimension
  • Spiritual dimension
  • Social dimension
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic dimensions

For a healthy mother and child: month wise diet check, month wise special ayurvedic preparations for the mother, traditional oil application (Abhyangam) from sixth month onwards. Other therapies like Shirodhara, belly massage, head massage and foot massage are also effective for relaxing the nervous system. Advice on activities that a pregnant woman should follow medicines for morning sickness and other pregnancy related complaints.

POSTNATAL CARE

Postnatal care is the period beginning immediately after the birth of a child to the first 6 weeks. Since the uterus expands due to delivery, the treatment helps it to shrink back to its normal size. Also the ligaments, muscles and tendons associated with uterus start gaining back the lost power.

AIMS OF POST-NATAL CARE:

  • To prevent post-partum lower back pain and to strengthen the back.
  • To re-establish the digestive and metabolic state (Agni) of the body.
  • Normalize the physiological functions and strengthening of the lax muscles and ligaments.
  • Ensure good quantity and quality of breast milk
  • Recommendation of diet and lifestyle that are apt for the mother
  • Encouraging healthy behaviors
  • Supporting good mental health
  • The toxins from the mind and body can be eliminated through various practices

 

FOR MOTHER:

INTERNALLY- Dasamoolarishtam, Jeerakarishtam, Asokarishtam, Dhanwantharam kashayam, Dhanwantharam gulika, Shatavari gulam, Thenginpookuladi lehyam, Panchakolasavam etc.

The medicines given in this stage will help the nourishment of the body, improvement of general health and toning up of the nerves and muscles. This also keeps away flatulence, gastric discomforts etc.

!! All the medicines are not advised together. Doctor combines the medicines based on the mother.

EXTERNALLY-

  • Abhyangam with Dhanwantaram kuzhambu, Pinda tailam etc. It helps to strengthen the lower back, Hip area, joints, muscles and tendons.
  • Kizhi for lower back pain
  • Herbal decoction bath
  • Avagaha (sitting bath)
  • Tummy care or Udara veshtanam
  • Pelvic tilt correction and pelvic exercises for low back pain
  • Simple yoga postures and meditation.

FOR BABY:

  • Mild oil massage with suitable oils like Nalpamaradi, Lakshadi etc.
  • Mild head massage
  • Herbal decoction bath
  • Uramarunnu gulika etc.
